Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri) also known as Kilanelli or nelanelli is one of the potent herbs in the Ayurvedic system. It is also called Seed under leaves, Stonebreaker, Bhumi Amalaki, or Gale of the wind. This plant is found in the temperate climate all over India. It is called ‘Bhumi amla’ because it is a small plant present in Bhumi and is usually found in the rainy season. Bhumi Amla in Ayurveda:

All the parts of Bhumi Amla including the leaves and roots are used in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties. According to Ayurveda, it pacifies both Kapha and Pitta dosha. It has a bitter, astringent, and sweet taste, and has cold potency. It has antispasmodic, astringent, hypotensive, antiviral, anthelmintic, hepatoprotective, hypoglycaemic, laxative, and diuretic properties. Here are a few Side effects of Bhumi Amla.

1. It should not be taken in high doses

One of the important side effects of Bhumi Amla is diarrhoea. Bhumi Amla is known for its laxative properties. It can clear our bowels and improves bowel movement. So, it should be taken in the recommended dose and duration as a high dose can cause diarrhoea.

2. Not suitable for Vata related problems 

According to Ayurveda, Bhumi Amla pacifies both Kapha and Pitta dosha, so if you have Vata-related problems like arthritis, Bhumi amla must be taken for a short duration. Consuming this for longer periods can increase Vata in the body.

3. Not suitable for people with low blood sugar

Bhumi Amla is known to control high sugar levels in the body by improving metabolism. It also has blood sugar lowering property. So, if you’re suffering from low blood sugar, it is best to avoid taking Bhumi Amla as it will further lower your blood sugar levels.

4. Not advisable during pregnancy

Bhumi amla is not advisable for pregnant women and must be used under medical supervision during breastfeeding. 

Recommended dosages for Bhumi Amla

· Bhumi Amla powder: ½ gram twice a day.

· Bhumi Amla juice: 2-4 teaspoons a day.

· Bhumi Amla capsules: 1-2 capsules twice a day.
