Palash is a medium sized tree that grows in dry seasons and dry regions. This tree bears dark orange or scarlet colored flowers and is called flame of the forest. Butea or Palash is extensively used in Ayurveda for its various medicinal values. From the month of March to July this tree becomes flame of the forest because it is totally covered with orange-red flowers. Flowers were used to preparing Holi colors in older days. In Ayurveda, it is used as anthelmintic and tonic. And its seeds are used as anti-parasitic and gum is astringent.

Various parts of Palash tree are used in traditional medicine system, Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani, for the treatment of a variety of diseases. The seeds of the tree have purgative, diuretic/stimulates the production of urine and anthelmintic/ anti-parasitic properties. The seeds powder is used in case of intestinal parasites. The seeds of Palash when ground with lemon juice have powerful rubefacient (causing dilation of the capillaries and an increase in blood circulation) action and are used for treating Dhobi’s itch or Jock’s itch.
